Howard Payne welcomed a
new czzch new players and new
strategies to the football field this
year. HPU started off the season
losing to University of Wisconsin
-LaCrosse East Texas Baptist
and Hardin Simmons before
entering the game on Saturday
against the number two ranked
team in NCAA Division III foot-
ball the Mary Hardin-Baylor
Crusaders.
"I didn't go to the game this
week because I figured that we
were going to lose. I didn't think
there was anyway that we could
win. They were ranked 2nd in
the nation. We had won one
game all season I just didn't
think it was possible" said Sam
Teja sophomore communication
major from Mason Texas.
It was possible as the HPU
defeated UMHB 24-20 with a
touchdown in the last minute of
the game.
After stopping the Crusaders
on fourth down with their backs
to the goal line HPU went 93

yards in eight plays in one min-
ute and eight seconds to score
the game clincher on a three-
yard touchdown pass from Adam
Johnson to Brandon Tolbert.
"This was the most exciting
game I have ever cheered at in
my career. I have never seen a
team pull themself together like
that. Even when they got down
they keep playing there hardest
the never gave up. The last min-
ute of the game all I remember
is jumping up and down and
screaming I was so excited it
was overwhelming" said Amy
Fuqua freshman elementary
education student.
The first half of the game was
filled with outstanding plays from
both teams. Before half time
Josh Welch the quarter back
for UMHB scored a touchdown
tying the score 10-10.
"When we went into half time
the whole team was pumped up
because we were tied with the
number two team in the nation
but we all knew was that we had
the momentum of the game in
the grasp of our hands so we
had to dig deep with in our souls
to come out on top. The only rea-
son that we won is because

Trustees approve raises for HPU faculty
by Katie Ellwodd
SPECIAL TO THE YJ
The Howard Payne University
faculty and staff received a 5
pay increase on October 1 2005
after the Board of Trustees had
met and voted on the decision.
Howard Payne's President
Dr. Lanny Hall recommended
the increase to the Board of
Trustees. The Board unanimous-
ly approved the increase during
the regular quarterly meeting
on September 30 2005. The
increase became effective with
the faculty and staff's next pay-
check. "This increase in compensa-
tion for HPU faculty and staff is
long overdue. HPU employees
are some of the most dedicated
and caring people in higher edu-
cation today. Our University is
blessed to have these wonderful
people giving of themselves on
a daily basis. I am thrilled that
our faculty and staff are receiv-
ing this increase in compensa-
tion" Dr. Hall said.
The employees that received
this salary increase are all the
full-time and regularly employed
part-time employees who were
on the payroll as of May 31
2005.
In the fall of 2003 the faculty
received a one-time bonus of
$1200. Other than that this is
the first compensation increase
since 2001. Unlike the bonus in
2003 this increase has raised
the salary levels for all eligible
employees.
