March is perhaps the
greatest month for college
basketball but if you want
the madness a little earlier
you don't have to wait.
The Howard Payne wom-
en's basketball team ranked
No. 6 in NCAA Division III
will host No. 16 Hardin-
Simmons at 5:30 p.m. today
and No. 12 McMurry at 1
p.m. Saturday.
McMurry ended the Lady
Jackets' 18-game win streak
with last Saturday's 61-60
victory in Abilene. The loss
dashed HPU's hopes for an
undefeated season plus
it ended the longest win
streak in school history and
the Lady Jackets' best start
in a season.
Today's game and
Saturday's game will be
crucial in the American
Southwest Conference
West Division women's
standings. Howard Payne
(18-1 overall) and McMurry
(17-2) are tied for the divi-
sion lead with 14-1 confer-
ence records while Hardin-
Simmons (15-3) is a game
behind at the co-leaders at
13-2.
The Lady Jackets beat
Hardin-Simmons 59-54 last
Thursday in Abilene.
The loss to McMurry is
in the past but it did more
than change a 0 to a 1 in the
Lady Jackets' loss column.
Loosing put a bad taste
in the girls' mouths" HPU
head coach Chris Kielsmeier
said. "It has helped us refo-
cus and stay motivated in
practice.
The best way to overcome
an upsetting loss is to come
out strong for the next game.
Kielsmeier hopes to do just
that Thursday against the
Cowgirls and Saturday
against McMurry.
"We have to stay moti-
vated and keep the game
plan" Kielsmeier said. "If
we do that we will win."
With HPU fans and stu-
dents observing a white-
out where everyone wears
something white Thursday
and a blue-out Saturday
Brownwood Coliseum will
be packed with two ranked
teams coming to town.
"What's more fun than two
rivalry teams going toe to
toe in an important game"
Kielsmeier said.
Kielsmeier isn't the only
one excited about this
