HPU appears to be getting well after being hit hard

Howard Payne students fac-
ulty and staff have been struck
hard this semester with the flu
virus.
"This is the worst I've ever
seen it"said Dr. Gary Gramling
professor of Christian Studies
who has been at HPU for 18
ears. Kim Brant assistant
piofessor of communication
said it was the worst she had
seen the flu in her 10 vcars at
HPU
"I'm ery close to being out
of the flu vaccine" said HPU
Nurse Sandy Smith.
There is encouraging news.
Smith said. "I've had no new
cases toda" she said Monday
"and we had fewer last week.
I probably saw 10 sick stu-
dents last week and it had
been roughly 20 to 30 students
a week in the weeks before.
Most had sore throats and
upper respirator) congestion.
Some had a stomach virus."
Although the flu shot was
given to students faculty and
staff members free of charge
those people weren't safe
from contracting the flu virus
because a strain of the virus
was not covered by the vac-
cination. On CNN Dr. Sanjay Gupta
said last week the flu vaccine
typically works 70-90 percent
of the time. This year's effec-
tiveness however has been
closer to 40 percent nation-
wide Gupta reported. "When
you decide what strains of flu
to put in a vaccination it's
like throwing a dart at a dart
board" Gupta said.

The flu virus has not only
hit HPU and Brownwood but
the nation as well. Gupta said
44 states had reported a wide-
spread flu epidemic so far this
year and that at least 10 chil-
dren across the nation have
died because of the flu.
It is still beneficial to get
the flu shot even if it may not
protect you against this year's
flu because it will still help you
in the long run. HPU's Smith
said taking the flu shot every
year will help build up your
immune system for the years
to come.
However people should not
depend on the flu shot alone.
Washing your hands periodi-
cally throughout the day plays a
key role in keeping you healthy
even when those around you
are not.
Keeping away from people
who have the flu can be dif-
ficult especially when your
roommate is sick. Smith gave a
few tips on how to stay healthy
if your roommate becomes sick
with the flu:
Constantly wash your
hands.
