and Mrs John H Brewer were
honored at a reception on Sunday
Sept 9 at the Falrlelgh Dickinson
Research Center
Dr Brewer's successor will be Dr
Algernon G Swan associate director
of the research center and a research
professor at HSU since 1981
Brewer has been associated with
HSU since 1969 and will be moving
with his wife Evelyn to Gibson
Island Maryland near Baltimore
Brewer has been serving as presi-
dent of the Science Research Center
Inc which has been located In the
Falrlelgh Dickinson Research Cen er
and will become vice chairman and
chief scientist of the company after

Dr Brewer was born on November
10 1909 In Gorman Texas where he
lived until his family moved to
Abilene He completed high school In
Abilene and attended Hardin
Simmons University from 1927 to
1931 receiving his BA and MA
degrees In chemistry
In 1931 he married Miss Evelyn
Harvey and moved to Austin Texas
where he worked at the Texas State
Department of Health Laboratories
and attended the University of Texas
In 1935 Dr Brewer moved to
Baltimore Md to attend John
Hopkins University Medical School
and In 1935 he received his Ph D In
medical bacteriology
From 1938 to 1969 he served as
director of biological research for
Hynson Westcott and Dunning and
Becton Dickinson Company In 1968
he retired from Becton Dickinson and
returned to Texas
He has served as professor of
microbiology at HSU as director of
the HSU Science Research Center
and as president of the Science
Research Center Inc
In the last 53 years Dr Brewer has
made many contributions In the
fields of microbiology and Im-
munology. He holds more than sixty
patents and Is one of the foremost
authorities In the field of anaerobic
microbiology
He has served on numerous na
tlonal and International committees
such as the U S Pharmacopla
American Drug Manufacturer's
Association International Atomic
Energy Agency NASA's Planetary
Quarantine Advisory Committee U S
Representative to Committee on
Space Research (COSPAR an Inter-
national space research policy com-
mittee) and numerous N1H and
public health policy and advisory
committees He is currently serving
on the NASA Life Sciences Advisory
Committee
Dr Brewer has had significant
roles in the development of
microbiology medical products pro-
duct sterilization and space
sciences

Dr White had served since 1982 as
dean of the School of Business and
Administration and professor of
marketing at Oklahoma Baptist
University Shawnee He has a doc
torate In business administration
with a marketing major and manage
ment and finance minors from
Mississippi State University

education at Wayland Baptist Univer-

Campus Revival slated
September 18-20
The Hardin Simmons University cam
pus revival with the theme ' Beholdl New
Things" Is slated to begin Tuesday Sept
18 and continue through Thursday Sept
20 according to Palmer McCown director
of Religious Activities
Doug Tlpps pastor of River Oaks Bap
tist Church In Houston will be the revival
preacher while Betsy Brown will be presen-
ting the special music Brown a profes-
sional musician Is a HSU graduate from
Midland
"I sense there are a lot of students here
this year that are excited about seeing God
do ome special things In their lives" said
McCown He went on to say that the
revival will be held during regular chapel
time on Tuesday and Thursday but that
an altered schedule will be h effect on
Wednesday
Chapel that morning will be held from
9 40 until 10 20 followed by the adjusted
10 00 class schudule from 10 30 until
11 10
The complete altered class schedule is as
follows
8 00 8 50 -8 00 class
8 50 9 30-9 00 class
9 40-10 20--chapel
10 30-11 10-11 00 class
11 20-12 00-11 00 class
12 10-12 50-12 00 class
Normal schedules will resume with 1 00
classes
Something new will be done this year as
far as the evening service goes Evening
services will be held in a tent which will be
placed in front of Anderson Hall McCown
said The evening service will begin at 7 00
on Tuesday and Thursday and at 8 30 on
Wednesday
"We're having the revival early this year
the third week of school to give ourselves
a challenge not to wait until the semester Is
over to serve God but to serve him Im-
mediately" McCown stated
He added that the Baptist Student
Union State Convention Is Just around the
corner September 28-30 and that
students can sign up now (or the weekend

Cisneros Introduced by university
president Dr Jesse Flethcer spoke on
three insights of the future beginning with
an observation of the Increasing growth In
Texas The unprecedented population
shift to the sunbelt states Texas Florida
and California has brought change In
Texas from its economy of oil and gas to
an economy based on high tech and elec-
tronics related industries according to
Cisneros The Alamo City mayor said
" this generation of students will not be
able to escape the responsibility of
growth "
'The second Insight Cisneros gave dealt
with the transformation of the Texas
economy Texas must be eased along Into
technology said Cisneros. However
Cisneros added that educated and
enllghtned Individuals must take steps to
understand the technological aspects of the
future
Cisneros' final Insight was in regard to
America's relations with the Latin
American countries The geographical
and political relationships shared by the
U S and countries to the south were cited
by Cisneros as reasons to turn from the
European faced International policies of
the past Cisneros said the problems are
solveable If addressed but Ignored will only
become someone else's problems
Cisneros concluded Ms speech by say-
ing that the Innate sense of optlmlsim that
Is a Texas trait must remain and never
cease The mayor also added" educa-
tion is an act of optimism the future is
ours to make us masters of our destiny "
Serving In his second term as mayor of
San Antonio Clsneros37 was elected In
April of 1983 with a 94 2 percent of the
vote. A graduate of Texas A&M Cisneros
received his bachelor of arts In 1968.
Cisneros remained at Texas A&M earning
his masters degree in urban and regional
planning before obtaining his second
masters degree In public administration at
the John F Kennedy School of Govern-
ment at Harvard Cisneros then went on
to complete his doctorate In the same field
from George Washington University
National attention was given to Cisneros
when he was interviewed by Presidential
Candidate Walter Mondale as a possible
running mate before choosing Geraldlne
Ferraro Cisneros served on the
President's commission on Federalism and
the national bl partisan commission of
Central America the Texas Aerospace
and National Defense Technology Coun-
cil and is vice chairman of the Governor's
Council of Mayors
Cisneros Is on the board of overseers at
Harvard and was recently given an
Honorary Doctorate of Laws from George
Washington University where he was also
awarded the Alumni Achievement Award
(or 1984.
