HSU basketball players honored

Shannon Wood 5'10M senior guard
from Lovington New Mexico was named
the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic
Association Player of the Week.
Wood scored 78 points in three games.
He had 24 point in a 123-95 win over Snl
Ross State 27 points in a 82-75 win over
ST. Edward's University and scored 27
more points in a 105-79 loss to Lubbock
Christian.
In conference standings as of Jan. 25
the Pokes (Cowboys) are tied for second
with a 3-2 record and ranked fifth overall
with a record of 7-9.
The HSU men are ranked in every
individual and team statistics category: in
scoring Shannon Wood is third Brian
Edwards and Jim Nelson are eighth and
ninth; in total field goal shooting Wood is
second and Edwards is eighth; in
free-throw shooting Lee Williams is third
and Edwards is seventh; in rebounding
6'6" Nelson is first and John Garner also
6'6" is ninth; in three-point field goal
shooting Wood is the only Poke coming in
at fourth; in the assists and block leaders
Wood is tops in assists and Nelson and
Garner are first and second in blocks.
HSU as a whole is second in offense
scoring third in defense scoring. From the
field the team is third; from the free-throw
line the PokevS are the best at first. But
from beyond the three-point line the team
falls to the bottom in seventh place. The
guys pick it up a little in the rebounding
assists and blocks ranks coming in at third.
HSU women's basketball players also
received recognition. Freshman guard
Terri Rogers from Webster was
nominated by the TIAA for the Player of
