Annual Rodeo Highlights
H-SU 'Western Days'

"Look at that cowboy bite the
dust!" And you can't look at the
cowboy if you have not been to
the 14th annual Intercollegiate
Rodeo which opened Thursday
night and will close with the 8
p. m performance Saturday night.
The night performances begin
each evening at 8 and Saturday
there will be an afternoon per-
formance beginning at 2 p. m. All
performances will be in the Carl
-Myers Memorial Areana west of
the campus on Grape Street.
Harctin - Simmons University
has eight students taking part in
this year's action. Eleven colleges
and universities have entered con-
testants in the six events for boys
and the two events for girls said
Miss Hattie Bell Martin secretary
of the athletic department.
Representing H-SU are Steven
Harwood Richmond; Ray Maner
Littlefield; Weldon Carriker
Clairemont; Jack Taylor Van
Horn; Ann Langehennig Mis-
souri; Barbara Fields Childress;

Garrett Coahoma.

was elected sweetheart of the 14th
Annual Hardin-Simmons Inter-
collegiate Rodeo Monday April 25.

Tech; New Mexico State Univer-
sity; and Lubbock Christian Col-
lege. Last year Sul Ross took top
honors accumulating 580 points.
But the outstanding attraction of
the 1959 rodeo was the one-man
performance of Lubbock Chrit-
ian's Edd Workman who earned
430 points in six events to be
named all-around cowboy.

is furnishing the stock for the
show which is judged to be some
of the wildest in the west and
is approved by the Rodeo Cow-
boy's Association.
Rodeo coach for this year's per-
formances is Jack Collins dean
of men. Highlighting the rodeo
will be the awarding of the prizes
at the final performance.Saturday
night Miss Martin said.
In the six boy's events contest-
ants will be vying for a buckle a
pair of boots a western hat a
western shirt and the all-around
cowboy will receive a saddle.
The girls will have a chance to
win a buckle hat and shirt in
each of the events with a trophy
girl
to be awarded the champion cow-

Theme of Devotions
"Golden Opportunities" will be
the theme of next week's Morning
Watch and Vesper Services ac-
cording to Mava Johnston Plain-
view sophomore.

treat. Morning Watch is held Monday
Wednesday and Friday at 7:30
a. m. in the Little Chapel. On
Thursday Vespers will be held in
the Little Chapel at 5:15 p. m.
On Tuesday afternoon only
Vespers will be held in the ceme-
tery by Sandefer Memorial Building.
Federal Inspection
Rated Superior
The Hardin-Simmons Univer-
sity ROTC unit was rated super-
ior during their annual Federal
Inspection held Monday April 11.
The inspecting officers Col. D.
Stevens Lt. Col. R. R. Kemm and
Maj. E. M. Atterberry said that
the unit was outstanding in every
respect.
The inspection included inspec-
tion of the ROTC facilities in-
struction administration supply
records and an inspection of the
Oadets in ranks. The inspection
team rated the unit higher than
they had been rated in. any prev-
ious Federal Inspection.

The chapel schedules for the
week May 2 through May 6
has been announced by Dean

One boy and two women will 'fill the editors and busi-
ness manager positions for publications for 1960-61.
Tom Stevenson of Abilene Mary Truly of Wichita Falls
and Pat Dishman of Rankin will serve as editor of the
Brand Bronco and business manager of all publications
respectively next year.
The publications chiefs were elected by the Publica-
tions Board in a Wednesday afternoon meeting.
Stevenson and Miss Dishman were unopposed but
Mary Truly and Melba Phillips of Borger were candi-
dates for Bronco editor.
Stevenson broke up the "wo-
man's world" in the publications
area at Hardin-Simmons Univer-
sity. This year all positions were
headed by women with Martha
Gay Ueckert being the first wo-
man Brand editor since 1953.
I feel that it is indeed an honor
to have been chosen editor of the
university newspaper and hope
that I can approvingly fill the
place of responsibility which the
Publications board has placed
upon me" Stevenson said after
being notified of his selection.
Stevenson has served as En-
tertainment editor for-the Brand
this year as well as photographer
for the News Bureau. ."And for
the Brand when the deadline is
near and no pictures have been
printed" Miss Ueckert said.
Stevenson a junior journalism
major has been elected president
of the Southwestern Journalism
Congress for next year. His elec-
tion was announced during the
annual congress meeting in Baton
Rouge La. in March. Stevenson
will preside at thenext congress

Wednesday following the meet-
ing. -Miss Truly a music education
major is a member of a cappella
choir YWA's former BSU pub-
licity chairman and member of
the Bronco staff during 1958-59.
Miss Dishman will serve as bus-
iness manager for all publica-
tions but primarily her job will
be obtaining advertising for the
Brand and administering the bud-
get. "From year to year the busi-
ness manager's responsibility has
increased which is a mark of ad-
vancement. I will do my best to
do the task set before me in a
manner which will benefit the
publications as well as the uni-
versity" Miss Dishman promised.
Miss Dishman has served as as-
sistant editor of the Brand this
year in addition to her -two year's
experience as a reporter and col-
umnist. Miss Dishman's by-line often
appears in the "Branding Iron"
column.
