Hardin-Simmons students went
to the polls once again last week
to decide two freshman positions
left open because of a runoff dur-
ing the October 7 general election.
Julia Lee defeated Cathy Hyatt
for the position of freshman class
Secretary. There was only a 30 vote
difference between the candidates
in the election which had a low
turnout. Lee totaled up 85 votes
while Hyatt turned in 55 votes.
In the race for freshman class
Treasurer Kay Grubbs defeated
Dana Teer. There was an 18 vote
difference between the two girls as
Grubbs took 79 votes and Teer
took 61 of the votes cast in the
election.
Robbin Ribble appointed Jan

the position. The reason behind
the move was not disclosed. Story

Helms presents
Computer paper
Dr. William Helms professor in
chemistry and physics at Hardin-
Simmons University will present a
paper on micro-computers at the
annual joint meeting of the Texas
Section of the American Associa-
tion of Physics and the Society of
Physics Students held Oct. 23-25
in Uvalde. The meetings will be
held on the Southwest Texas
Junior College campus.
Helms" paper entitled "Use of
KIM-1 Microcomputer as Data Log-
ger and Signal Averager for Beck-
man Spectrometer" will be pre-
sented today.
Helms' paper resulted from a re-
cent student lab project at HSU
which involved having a micro-
computer record and average data
directly from a chemical spec-
trometer a devise that measures
the absorption of certain fre-
quencies of light by a chemical
sample.
The theme for the meeting the
primary gathering for those who
teach physics in Texas colleges
and universities is the use of
mini-computers and micro-
computers in physics education.
Helms said this theme reflects the
recent revolution in the field of
electronics which has made possi-
ble small inexpensive computers
which can be used as electronic in-
strumentation in the laboratory.
Helms' participation in the
meeting is funded by the Cullen
Fund for Faculty Enrichment.
