Local mentally retarded children
to perform for music classes
ACU students will have the opportunity to
leam from a group of young musicians
composed of mentally retarded children and
local sixth-graders Tuesday during a
demonstration of handbells and guitars.
Trainable mentally retarded children and
Locust Elementary School sixth-graders will
demonstrate their skills to two music ap-
preciation classes in Roxie Neal Recital Hall
at 8:30a.m.
Tuesday's performance is also a rehearsal
in preparation for a musk education
demonstration at the Texas Music
Educators Convention in San Antonio Feb.
12 said Bob Siltman music coordinator of
Abilene Independent School District.
Teachers at the convention will consider
"the educational possibilities of using
handbells and guitars in the regular musk
classes and in classes of musk for the
trainable mentally retarded" Siltman said.
"The sixth grade at Locust Elementary
was chosen because of its uniqueness in that
it comes from the lowest socioeconomic level
community in this school district" he said.
"The mentally retarded students were
chosen because of their limited ability to
communicate within our society. Both
groups will demonstrate the strength of
individual self-esteem."
Siltman believes the students "have
grown because of this musical experience to
be able to represent themselves their
families and their community in a most
professional manner. With a renewed self-
image they have a renewed desire."
The group's director Letha McGrew is
musk teacher at both schools. She has
taught in Abilene since 1900 and has worked
in special education four of those yean.
