Bank of Mineral Wells

Description: Undated photograph that appears to have been published in the Mineral Wells Index. The picture is on p. 148 of A.F. Weaver's book "TIME WAS In Mineral Wells." The caption reads, "Palo Pinto County Boys' and Girls' Clubs and Junior Rotary Band at the Bank of Mineral Wells to receive pure-bred eggs distributed free by the bank, March 11." The bank, located at 102 SE 1st. Ave., was Mineral Wells' first bank. It went broke in 1924, and the building was then used by Ball Drug and Massengale's Appliances before being torn down to make room for more downtown parking.

[The Burning of Crazy Flats]

Description: The "Crazy Flats" drinking pavilion replaced a two-story Crazy Water drinking pavilion in 1909. The first Crazy Hotel was built in 1912, and an annex was added to it in 1914. A fire in the "Crazy Flats" March 15, 1925 destroyed the entire Crazy block. The hotel was completely rebuilt and enlarged in 1927. The new building was promoted as fireproof since it had solid cement walls and ceilings. After a colorful past during the Great Depression and World War II, the "new" Crazy Hotel is now a Retirement Home.

Note the Crazy Water Hotel ,on the corner of North Oak and N.W. 3rd St. which places this picture as taken after 1927 at which date it had opened. Note also the Nazareth Hospital.

[Crazy Hotel after the Fire of 1925]

Description: A handwritten note on the back of the photograph identifies the picture as "Crazy Hotel southside after fire of March 15, 1925." This was the skeleton of the two adjoined sections of the Crazy Hotel after the fire destroyed the entire Crazy Bolck. The second Crazy Hotel, opened two years later, in 1927, and covers the entire city block formerly occupied by the complex which it replaced. The original hotel complex consisted of two adjoined hotel sections, the Crazy Flats (drinking pavilion and rooms for rent), a bath house, and a drugstore (where the fire started). The second famous second Crazy Hotel of the booming 1930s and 1940s is now (2008) a Retirement Hotel.

Crazy Water Hotel from East Mountain

Description: A view from East Mountain along 2nd St. toward West mountain. West Ward School and the second Mineral Wells High School are visible, as is the Rock School. The rebuilt Crazy Water Hotel is seen in the right of the photo, and construction of the Nazareth Hospital to the northwest of the Hotel is underway. Nazareth Hospital was built as a clinic by the Crazy Hotel shortly after the (new) hotel was built. An order of Catholic Nuns bought the clinic from the Baker and operated it as a hospital through the early 1960s. The photo was taken shortly after the hotel opened in 1927.
