Paris Texas IOOF Building
Photograph of the rebuilt IOOF Building,1stSW Street and Grand Avenue on the southwest corner of Fountain Square in downtown Paris,Texas. This building was "gutted" by the 1916 fire. This building has dual dates in the date medallion on the east side, First SW Street, indicating a history back to 1851. The IOOF Lodge entrance is at ground level and bears a date of 1921, after the 1916 fire. The building IOOF building due to the non-operative IOOF sign above the front corner. As is today the building reflects typical Classic Revival style of commercial buildings of the period.
IOOF Building in Paris

On the brick building "cap", there is a a white stone insert with a dual date: "1851 + 1916". Another white stone insert above one entrance says "Wildey Lodge No. 21, I.O.O.F." In early photos, this building was mostly standing but gutted by the 1916 fire and the date medallion reflects the building's continuity.

Sporting Goods Store in Paris
Photograph of the current Williams' Sporting Goods Store (located next to the Plaza Theater) in downtown Paris,Texas. The upper story is the original architecture and displays excellent commercial brick work, carved stone inserts, a white sting course and frieze, and a white stone cap. The lower story has a metal canopy and a metal, framed-glass front which were added later.

Paris Texas Plaza Theater
Photograph of the Plaza Theatre in downtown Paris, Texas. This is an Art Deco-style building with strong vertical lines, arches, spiral-cut columns, white stone window ledges, column bases, cornice consoles, and dentil contrasts with the red tile roof, window trim, and trim at the ground level. The buff-colored brick of the walls predominate the building and there is also an urn on a pedestal, centered between the windows. The large Plaza Theater sign appears to be the original although the marquee was added after 1984; a theater organ was installed in 1926, probably soon after the building was built. Many classify this building as Moderne style and the ornamentation as Art Deco.
Plaza Square Building Canopy in Paris, Texas

Although previous architecture styles were massive and had massive stone carvings, this Early Art Deco style shows evidence of a move to more modern styles.

Union Station in Paris, Texas
Photograph of the 1912 Union Station depot located west of downtown Paris, Texas. The building has Prairie-style architecture with some Italianate features. Slightly south of this location, the March 21-22, 1916 Paris fire started along the railroad tracks and raced northeast through downtown Paris, Texas; this structure missed the fire and continued in service.

Photograph of the south east corner of the Cornerstone building, at Lamar Avenue and 2nd NE Street in Paris, Texas. On top of the wall, above the cornice, is a white colored replacement for the original ornamentation. The gray cornice is supported by ornamental consoles and there are gray medallions on the buff colored brick below the cornice. These features appear to be molded, not carved. The windows have white masonry ledges and bricked over steel lintels. The "Cornerstone" sign is noteworthy.
First United Methodist Church THC Marker
Photograph of a historical marker for the First United Methodist Church in downtown Paris, Texas, located at Lamar Avenue and 3rd NE Street. The marker was established by the Texas Historical Commission and reads: "First United Methodist Church of Paris The beginning of this congregation can be traced to 1843, when the Rev. James Graham organized the First Methodist Church in the area. It later took the name Centenary Methodist Episcopal Church, South. Meanwhile, another congregation, Lamar Avenue Methodist Church, was formed. After the destructive Paris fire of 1916, the two churches decided to form one central downtown congregation, and the merger became official in 1918. The Rev. Robert P. Shuler was appointed first pastor of the new congre-gation, now known as First United Methodist Church of Paris. (1985)"
