The Representative

Published from 1871 to 1873 by Richard Nelson, the Representative was the first Texas newspaper to be published by an African American proprietor and editor. Born a free person in Key West, Florida, Richard Nelson became an influential politician and journalist in the Galveston area, active from 1866 until his death in 1914. Within its pages, the Representative advertises that, "It will advocate the rights of all American citizens, 'without regard to color, race, or previous condition of servitude.'"
