Algorithms for routing vehicles and their application to the paratransit vehicle scheduling problem

Algorithms for routing vehicles and their application to the paratransit vehicle scheduling problem

Date: March 2012
Creator: Park, Myoungkuk; Oberlin, Paul; Rathinam, Sivakumar; Quadrifoglio, Luca & Darbha, Swaroop
Description: "As the demand for paratransit services increases, there is a constant pressure to maintain the quality of service provided to the customers while minimizing the cost of operation: this is especially important as the availability of public funding for paratransit services has been on the decline. Key tasks in accomplishing this objective are efficiently allocating vehicles to service trips and adjusting the schedules of vehicles dynamically in response to calls received by the service providers from the customers on the day of the service."

Alternative methods for developing external travel survey data

Alternative methods for developing external travel survey data

Date: October 2010
Creator: Farnsworth, Stephen; Talbot, Eric; Songchitruksa, Praprut; Reeder, Phillip & Pearson, David
Description: The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has a comprehensive on-going travel survey program that supports the travel demand models being developed for transportation planning efforts in urban areas throughout Texas. One component of the survey program is the external travel survey. External travel surveys provide data on travel movements into, out of, and through urban areas. In recent years, there has been a heightened sensitivity to the methods used to collect external survey data as well as the type of data that is collected. This research examines alternative methods for collecting data on external travel movements and evaluates the potential for synthesizing/modeling external travel in lieu of conducting external surveys. The research will provide recommendations to TxDOT on the most viable methods to estimate external travel movements for use in travel demand models in urban areas in Texas.

An alternative transportation fuels update : a case study of the developing E85 industry

An alternative transportation fuels update : a case study of the developing E85 industry

Date: October 2011
Creator: Travare, Papa S. & Lewis, Sharon
Description: "As the United States imports more than half of its oil and overall consumption continues to climb, the 1992 Energy Policy Act established the goal of having "alternative fuels" replace at least ten percent of petroleum fuels used in the transportation sector by 2000, and at least thirty percent by 2010. Currently, alternative fuels consumed in Alternative Fuel Vehicle (AFVs) account for less than one percent of total consumption of gasoline. This paper examines how alternative fuel E85 can be used to reverse that trend. In addition, this research paper will take a look at some of the ongoing government decisions concerning the use of the alternative fuel E85, and will discuss what policy makers might hold for the future in terms of the supply and demand of alternative fuels in the United States. This case study will be useful to all stakeholders involved in the transportation industry, including, but not limited to the government, policy makers, automakers, motorists, and researchers, eager to find a just balance with both a better transportation system and a healthy and clean environment."
