Description: An advertiement for the Gulf Texas and Western Railroad in the shape of a bottle of mineral water. The GTW (sometimes referred to by locals as "Get your Ticket and Walk") was built from Seymour through Olney and Jacksboro to Mineral wells around 1912. The line joined the Weatherford, Mineral wells and Northwestern Railroad some 12 miles north of Mineral Wells and operated over the WMW&NW tracks through Mineral Wells, Weatherford, Ft. Worth and on to Dallas. A round trip from Seymour to Dallas was made daily by a gasoline powered all-passenger motor car. The reverse side of the advertisement indicates building of the railroad was underwritten by Beetham and Sons.

"Crazy" Water Crystals Plant

Description: "Crazy" Water Crystals Plant, built in 1919. In the plant, mineral water was boiled down until only the mineral crystals were left. When dissolved in water, the crystals became an early version of "instant food." Through radio advertising in the 1930s over the Texas Quality Network direct from the lobby of the Crazy Hotel, a market for the "Crazy Water Crystals" was developed all over the world. This picture of the plant plant has been computer enhanced.

[Dismuke's Famous Mineral Crystals Label]

Description: One of the by-products of the mineral water which made Mineral Wells famous was the mineral crystals which were shipped all over the world. Purchasers could disolve the crystals in tap water and reportedly receive the same benefits from the reconstituted water as from the well water. The first "instant" food? The Famous Water Company and the Famous Crystal Company were founded by Ed Dismukes, a druggist from Waco who came to Mineral Wells for his health. Under different ownership, the Famous Water Company is still in operation, the only mineral water company in Mineral Wells at this time.

The First Well Was Dug Here in 1877

Description: Photograph of a cartoon. "1880" is written in ink at bottom of the photo evidently in correction of the cartoon. Lynch arrived in what would later be Mineral Wells in 1877. His first well, dug to 41 feet in 1878, was dry. The second well, drilled to a deeper depth, in 1880 yielded the mineral water after which Mineral Wells was later named.
