The Mexican Revolution prompted foreign volunteers to participate in the revolution for a variety of reasons. Many volunteers were called to action in the name of adventure, while others reported to duty as mercenaries. The tall man with a beard, standing directly behind the man hunched over, is said to have been known as American Slim.
