Serving the population of Mexia, Texas, the Gibbs Memorial LIbrary is located in northeastern Limestone County. Mexia, Texas, was a center of booms and busts for the oil and gas industry during the early 20th-century. Mexia's townsite was established in 1870 by the Houston and Texas Central Townsite Company, and lots began selling in 1871. By 1872, the post office began operation. The first library in Mexia was the Mexia Public Library, built in 1903. In 1949, the Gibbs Memorial Library was built, and it remains open to this day.
