Traffic Operations and Safety Benefits of Active Traffic Strategies on TxDOT Freeways

Description: Report discussing a project, which developed a series of interdependent models and a simulation framework to evaluate the traffic operations and safety benefits of ATM strategies. Four ATM scenarios were evaluated in this study: variable speed limits (VSL), peak-period shoulder use, VSL and shoulder use, and ramp metering.

Implementation of Database for TxDOT ARRA Projects

Description: Report discussing projects initiated under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), a fiscal stimulus package signed by President Obama on March 6, 2009. State agencies like the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) who received ARRA funds had to report, on a monthly basis, various data on each project in the ARRA program, including staff numbers, hours worked, and payroll. TxDOT asked the Center for Transportation Research (CTR) to identify and isolate specific elements … more

Application guide and specifications for geotextiles in roadway applications

Description: Abstract: "Geotextiles, one among the different geosynthetic products, can be used for a number of functions or applications in pavement design. The benefits of using geotextiles in pavements and other transportation applications have triggered a proliferation of products. While this abundance of new products has led to reduction in costs, it has also made it difficult for TxDOT personnel to choose appropriate products based on their engineering properties. Consequently, this report provides th… more

Literature review of current practices in dealing with fluctuations of maintenance budgets

Description: Report discussing a literature review of current budget cutting strategies used in routine roadway maintenance planning, including methods and techniques that are employed by other state and international transportation organizations (DOT's). It also reviewed methodologies developed from previous research and identified the most effect risk management techniques.

Alternative Methods of Flexible Base Compaction Acceptance

Description: "This report summarizes the concerns expressed with the current Texas Department of Transportation(TxDOT) methods, presents approaches some TxDOT districts have taken to overcome problems, and summarizes the current status of other agencies' efforts at mechanistic based acceptance for flexible base. Also this report presents results and findings from a full-scale compaction experiment."

Positive Feedback: Exploring Current Approaches in Iterative Travel Demand Model Implementation

Description: This report looked at the current Texas Department of Transportation Travel Demand Model (TxDOT TDM) and found that they do not include any impedance or accessibility measures in the trip generation step and found that the best approach is to feed back the output from the traffic assignment step to the trip distribution step.

Research and recommendations for a statewide sign retroreflectivity maintenance program

Description: "This report evaluated Texas Department of Transportation's (TxDOT) current sign retroreflectivity maintenance practices, assessed their effectiveness, and recommended statewide sign retroreflectivity maintenance practices that could be easily and effectively implemented to ensure that TxDOT would be in compliance with the new Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) language related to minimum sign retroreflectivity."

Evaluation, presentation and repair of microbial acid-produced attack of concrete

Description: This report evaluates the severity of the deterioration in bridges to determine if microbial induced deterioration (MID) is a significant contributor by visual inspection and a number of tests on twelve selected columns. This report also evaluates the effectiveness of suggested test procedures on identifying microbial attack on concrete and the integrity of deteriorated concrete due to the attack.
