Description: Patent for a new and improved feed water heater. This design "provide[s] a system of levers and a float which will automatically regulate the feed or supply of water to such heaters and lime-extractors . . . and further, that by securing a uniform supply of water the steam acts more equally upon the water, and thus secures a more uniform deposit of the lime" (lines 22-33). This allows for fewer accidents and less damage to the engine.

Description: Patent for a new and improved chair for railroad rails. This design utilizes a metal key and wrought-iron straps so that "the rails are held firmly both laterally and vertically, so that they are kept level at the joint and any sagging is prevented. At the same time endwise movement by expansion or contraction is not hindered, and the chairs being fastened to the ties, the expansion and contraction will take place entirely between the several chairs" (lines 49-57).

Description: Patent for a new and improved ant trap. This design calls for a tank of water to be buried in the ground and a collar of cheap material to be attached to the tank and placed over the mouth of an anthill. The concave nature of the collar prevents ants from climbing out of it, so they are forced into the water tank, where they drown; the design is cheaper and less toxic than previous designs.

Description: Patent for a new and improved bale tie. This design "consists of a short thin plate of metal having two tongues . . . fronting each other, said plate being pivoted at one end to the bale-hoop . . . the other end of the bale-hoop being passed under the tongues and drawn tightly around the bale, the expansion of the bale on the hoop causes the respective ends to pull on the respective ends of the tie-plate . . . so as to grip the edges of the end passed between the tongues and hold it firmly" (lines 7-19).

Description: Patent for a new and improved napkin ring and holder. This design is "to receive the napkin after it is folded, or to be used as a device for sustaining the napkin at the neck of the user when at the table. It consists in a yoke-shaped piece of metal having a hinged section for connecting the two ends, and serving as a ring, in combination with a clasp for holding the napkin . . . at the throat" (lines 17-25).
