Description: An Entry in Weslaco's annual "Birthday Party" fashion show. Organized by the Chamber of Commerce to highlight the fruit and vegetables grown in the Rio Grande Valley, area citizens created and modeled clothing made from local fruit, vegetables, and flowers. Mrs. Blackwell is representing the Rio Grande Valley Farm Federation. This evening gown was made from calyz, or inner core of the bachelor button. Approximately 13,000 purple and white bachelor button calyx were used. The bertha of the dress was made line with finely shreaded petals of the flower, and the same material was used for the gloves and draped evening sandals. The earrings, necklace and bracelet were of green bean seeds. The corsage in her hair and trimmings on the dress were of yellow chrysanthemums and statice, and her fan was made of bachelor button centers and stems. Workers spent 1,470 hours and $25 on the dress.
