Sub-Element

Definition

The language (s) of the intellectual content of the resource

Comment

This will be the language(s) in which a text is written or the spoken language(s) of an audio or video. Visual images normally do not have a language except there is significant text in a caption or in the image itself. Because of the global nature of the Internet, use of this field is recommended. Preferred usage is to use a standard schema for language names as defined by ISO639-2 (three letter language codes) at: http://www.loc.gov/standards/iso639-2/englangn.html  followed optionally, by a two-letter Country Code (taken from the ISO 3166 standard [ISO3166]).

Input Guidelines:

  • Select the correct language name/code combination from the Language drop box
  • A resource may include multiple languages. Repeat the element if the resource is in more than one language.
    • N.B. If a complex note is required to accurately describe the nature of the language, then also add this information in the Description element. (Eg.1: Articles in Amharic with English translations in parallel columns; Eg.2: Spanish or English with abstracts in English)
    • Note: The option of adding country codes in combination with the language codes as in “eng-UK” for English, United Kingdom or “eng-US” for English, United States, is omitted deliberately in this guide. . Country codes are defined in ISO3166 standard at http://www.iso.org/iso/en/prods-services/iso3166ma/02iso-3166-code-lists/list-en1.html
