Description: Photograph of a historic plaque in Coleman, Texas. It reads: "County Named in 1857 for Robert M. Coleman (1799-1837). Born in Kentucky. Came to Texas in 1832. Commanded Company of volunteers at siege of Bexar (San Antonio), Dec. 5-10, 1835. Delegate to Constitutional Convention where he signed Texas Declaration of Independence, 1836. Aide-de-Camp to Gen. Sam Houston at Battle of San Jacinto, 1836. Later fought Indians as a Texas Ranger. (1966)"

[Copy of letter from Sam Houston to Joseph Ellis, June 12, 1847]

Description: Copy of a letter from Sam Houston to his friend Joseph L. Ellis of Grand Cane at his plantation "Pleasant Lawn." Discusses Judge Worsham, the health of the Houston family, and neighbors. This letter is purported to be a hoax and forgery, as multiple copies exist. It was found folded inside a book that was published in the late 1800s and given to the library over sixty years ago.

Description: This book is the first in a series of four volumes and contains collected correspondence to and from Sam Houston. According to information on the inside front cover, it includes letters "between Sam Houston and his wife, and their letters to other family members, family physicians, and close personal friends." The letters include footnotes that give clarification and context. The volume also has a bibliography, appendix, and index (which starts on page 377).
