Above, and right of the overlay, is the Lamar Bath House and Hotel complex--the current site of the Baker Hotel. Description: A lady in period clothing viewing city of Mineral Wells from a rock formation, ca. 1920. She is on East Mountain, looking southwest. A popular activity for tourists was to climb the mountain and view the city. One of 17 (4"X4") negatives that was in an envelope from Charles W. Simonds, Route 5, Box 43, Norman, Oklahoma, 73069, addressed to A.F. Weaver Photography and postmarked Aug. 4, 1975. Also on the envelope, some phone numbers and "Father - C.W. Simonds (Clarence Winfield)."

Description: Aerial view of Downtown Mineral Wells, taken from the Ft. Worth Star Telegram, January 1954, at about S. Oak Ave. and S. 5th St. looking NNE. Some of the buildings identifiable in the picture no longer exist: the Damron Hotel at the middle left of the picture burned in 1975; the Oxford Hotel/First National Bank building, one block east --left--of the Damron, near the center of the picture burned in 1983 and has been replaced by Lynch Plaza; the Hexagon Hotel in the upper left corner of the picture, north and above the Crazy, was demolished in 1959; and the Convention Center behind the Hexagon was demolished in 1976. Landmarks still standing are: the 13-story (including the Roof Garden) Baker Hotel dominating the right middle of the picture, The Crazy Hotel (now a retirement home) at the upper left of the picture and the old Post Office in the upper middle of the picture, now the Woman'Club. The building across the street and south--this side--of the Baker was demolished to make room for the Mineral Wells Savings and Loan which in turn was replaced by The First State Bank.

Description: The Dr. J.H. McCracken home built in 1904 at 516 West Hubbard and was restored by Gil Hull. Joseph Hill McCracken was born on a farm near Springtown, TX, Octobe 1, 1867. He graduated from the University of Tennessee Medical School in 1891, and returned to Texas. On October 15, 1895, he married Marie Sue Wilson, the daughter of Oliver Loving's youngest daughter, Margaret. He was elected President of the Texas Medical Associatin in 1911 and practiced medicine in Mineral Wells for over fifty years and frequently laughed about having "delivered babies of babies of babies." Dr. McCracken died in March of 1954, and his wife died in November of 1955. Both are buried in Mineral Wells' Woodland Park Cemetery. Professor John N, McCracken, who established the Mineral Wells College directly across the street west of the McCracken home, is believed to be Dr. McCracken's father.

Description: Construction of the Mineral Wells Savings and Loan, at 101 SE 1st. Ave. in 1975, was documented in this series of photographs. The Howard Building, first of the Howard Brothers Department Stores complex, was built at this location in the early 1900s. D.M. Howard was the first of five brothers to arrive from North Carolina, and he later sent for his other brothers to join him. Demolition of the Howard Building began March 17, 1975, to make room for the Savings and Loan. The Piggly Wiggly Grocery Store (at the site of Mineral Wells' first Post Office) and the Green Stamp Store are visible across SE 1st. Ave. south of the Savings and Loan. Currently the new First State State covers the entire city bolck at this location. lloan

Description: Panoramic view of Mineral Wells. From East Mountain? This picture was sent to A.F. Weaver in 1975 from Charles Windell Simonds of Norman, OK. with a note indicating they were taken by his father (Clarence Winfield Simonds) Jan. 11, 1919. The view appears to be from East Mountain looking southwest. Another picture in this series, looking southwest, has more and better details of downtown Mineral Wells. A power plant is in the right center of this picture, but other landmarks have not been identified.

Description: Entrance to Crazy Park, Mineral Wells, Texas, in 1938. Earlier this park was part of the Gibson Pavilion and Park in the 700 block of NW 2nd Ave. It was located a the block south of the Crazy Water Crystals plant, built in 1919. The property now (2008) belongs to, and is occupied by, the First Christian Church.
