CANOE
The fifth annual North Texas Water Safari nears a
climax, as canoes skim along the Trinity River toward
the finish line near California Crossing bridge in
Northwest Dallas. The race began yesterday at Garza-
Little Elm, paused for the night at the Carrollton
covering
Dam, then resumed this morning. The race,Min a
is won by
total of 37 miles, =. two college students from DM
Dallas, Tommy Rogers and Steve Meredith,LS CANOES
For the first time, the Safari includes a womens'
division. The gals started their race this morning at
Carrollton Dam, about ten miles from the finish line.
The winners, who covered the distance in two hours and
nine minutes, are sisters, Mrs. Peggy Maddox and Mrs.
Betty Warren.
Peggy says it was a battle all the way,

and Ak"p agrees.
In second place, less than a minute behind, are Betsy
Watson and Gail Hudson. And itts too bad they dontt
