Notes

Elizabeth Catlett (1915–2012) achieved international fame for her powerful explorations of race, class, and her own African American female identity through printmaking and sculpture. Catlett's work speaks to her training in printmakings power to politically challenge society and its corruption. Catlett graduated from Howard University and then with her MFA from the University of Iowa in the 1940s. She then went on to accept a fellowship in Mexico where she continued her printmaking career.
