Notes

1959 ensemble by Cristobal Balenciaga, exhibition text read: Arguably the most noted and influential fashion designer of the twentieth century, Cristóbal Balenciaga drew inspiration from international art and fashion history to create innovative garments. While the Western standard for tailoring shapes fabric to follow the contours of the body, Balenciaga and Japanese designers instead allow the wearer and clothing to celebrate their own unique and related forms. Highlighting the space between the body and the garment – a Japanese aesthetic concept called ma – this cocktail ensemble employs stiff fabric and complex construction to create a voluminous and sculptural form around the wearer. A trademark Balenciaga construction element, the stand-away collar creates the illusion of a long, graceful neck that balanced out many of Balenciaga’s clients hunched shoulders and showed off their necklaces and strands of pearls. Similarly, kimono collars reveal the nape of the neck, which in Japan is considered a sensuous part of the body.
