THE FIRST of the Publications of the Texas
Folklore Society, Round the Levee, edited by
Stith Thompson, was published in 1916. By
1972 thirty-six volumes had appeared, record-
ing approximately two thousand folktales,
ranging in type from simple puns to complex
relatings of marvels and adventures and in treat-
ment from straightforward presentation to

parts. The first is made up of a group of spe-
cialized indexes of tale types, motifs, and ballad
numbers, identifying for the comparative folk-
lorist such items appearing in the Publications
as have received scholarly treatment in master
catalogs like Stith Thompson's Motif-Index of
Folk-Literature and Francis J. Child's English
and Scottish Popular Ballads.
In Part II the tales are summarized and the
summaries arranged under such headings as
"Myths and Explanatory Tales," "Tales of Magic,
Marvels, Adventure, and Intrigue," and "Real-
istic-Minded Tales of Humor," to mention
three of nine groups. While, as Bratcher writes,
"mere summaries cannot, of course, do justice
to the bulk of the texts," they can be of great
help to the folklorist in his search for com-
parative data, "since there is only so much that
the fleshless tale-type and motif numbers in use
by folklorists can accomplish in reflecting nar-
