CARTER SENTENCING

NEGRO WALKS IN

In Dallas, 28-year-old Harold Carter decides
he was lucky to escape the electric chair
for the rape last May of a 25-year-old white
telephone operator. Carter decides he will
not appeal the life sentence handed him by
a criminal         district court jury last
Friday. Judge Brown asks Carter if he's
satisfied with a life sentence and Carter

smiles, nods his head and says yes. Judge
Brown pronounces sentence. The verdict of
life in prison came as a surprise to the
state. State's attorneys had demanded the
'death penalty. The'rape victim had testified
that Carter held a knife to her throat during
the attack.
