The Thomas A. Edison elementary school, at 29-40 Single-
ton in W!est Dallas, is one of 27 schools in the city
OPEATONHEADSTARTJ
taking part in The eight-week long
program got underway today in both Dallas and Fort WIMM
Worth. HEADSTART is for children five and six years
old who come from low-income families, and part of ther President's War-On-Poverty program.
Its intent is to
expose the underprivileged to new sensations and learn-
ing experiences that will make it easier for them laterin public school.
This is one of four classes at the
Edison school, each class with five children and two
teachers. More than fifty youngsters were expected ati3 the Edison school, but only twenty appeared.
Citywide,
15-hundred children got started in HEADSTART, about
350 fewer children than were committed to the program
by their parents. Similarly, in Fort Worth, 12-hundred
children began the program, fewer than expected, but
officials in both cities expect the numbers to increase.
