FORT WORTH BIRTHDAY 1-1-1
One hundred twelve years ago today,
sent on mission by General Winfield Scott, arrived
on the banks of the Trinity River and established
a post which they called mWorth. The post
later became a fort, and /on that spot now sits the
Tarrant County court house. On that June 6th in
1849, the city of Fort Worth had its beginning.
The post was established to protect the sparsely
settled territory from Indians. The war department
changed the name to Fort Worth, but no fort was
ever erected and, in 1853, the soldiers moved on.w
The settlement became a
trading post for the scattered ranchers. Buffalo
hides and bones were big business then. In
1873, Fort Worth was incorporated as a city when its
population reached 4-thousand. When the Texas and
Pacific railroad reached town in 1876, Fort 'orth
was on its way to becoming one of the grnat cities
