GEN. WALT - 1
Lieutenant-General Lewis Walt, who commanded all U-S
Marine Forces in Vietnam, says defectors from the north
told him Hanoi does& not expect to win the war mili-
tarily -- but does expect a victory to be delivered by
public anti-war sentiment in the United States.
General Walt tells a Dallas Chamber of Commerce lunch-
eon that half the men in one North Vietnamese regi-
ment are really boys -- 16 years old. Some Vietcong
units, he says, are 30-percent women. The general
says the South Vietnamese army is still short on
leadership, but growing steadily more courageous. And
he says the public is more and more refusing to be
intimidated by Vietcong terrrosist activity. General
Walt is generally optimistic about the war's progress.
