SWISH TO COMMISSTONERS
Dallas County Commissioners Court formally gives
approval to using a portion of the old county jail
for housing the mentally ill. The court also
appropriates 20-thousand dollars to make over the
old jail's fifth floor. Fifteen-thousand dollars
will be used for air-conditioning the area. The
other five-thousand will be used to make the area
look less like a jail. .Work already was underway
when approval came this morning. County Building
Superintendent Jake Ballard says cell bars are
being covered with plaster to resemble simple
partitions and window bars will be replaced with
what are known as security windows. Mental
patients awaiting hearings or transport to state
hospitals are being kept in the new county jail.
Hopefully, the new quarters will be ready for
occupancy within three weeks.
