basketball schedule. With two more
games to play one of which Is with
the leading Texas Wesleyan Rams
the Billies hare a more than fair
chance of retaining the present per

One of the highlights of the com-

Texas Wesleyan cadgers will be an
Army band. Beside this added at-
traction the game will be the last
appearance of the Billies In Brown-

this year's Baker cagers are always
dangerous and may be able to

Three Basic
Necessities
Revised
AUSTIN Texos. (ACP) Mod-
ern America no longer considers
"food shelter and clothing" the
three basic necessities but revises
the list to read "food shelter and
automobile."
That at least is the conclusion
to be drawn from statistics on fam-
ily expenditures In nine Texas
communities surveyed by the Uni-
versity of Texas bureau of business
research. The average Texas fam-
ily spends 25 per cent of its In-
come for food 14 per cent for rent
and 12 per cent for car expenses.
Clothing comes In fourth with nine
per cent. Average expenditure for
education in Texas families is ap-
proximately $100 a year. The re-
port shows that education costs
the family with an annual income
of f 500 or less $20 a year but Jumps
to an average of $262 for families
whose incomo top the $5000 mark.

Chesse Playoff
Begins Next
Week
With eight students responding
to Intellectual activity Induced by
our recent requests for chess play
ers the first games of our inter-
collegiate contest are being played.
The contest Is being conducted by
the "round-robin" system; that is
each player plays everyone else In
the tournament an dthe champion-
ship goes to the person with the
highest percentage of wins. Since
two conquests of each opponent
are necessary this will mean that
one hundred and twelve games will
be played in the next two weeks
It no one has to play more than
two games with the same opponent.
Checkmates must be obtained to
score a victory all stalemates be-
ingreplayed. The present standings are BUI
Achor with 1.000 percent; Bill
Pope and George Gray with .600
each and Richard Vaughn in the
cellar. These standings do not ac-
curately fortell the future ratings;
in as much as only two games have
been played by the most active
contestants and all of the contest-
ants have the majority of their
bouts to complete before the final
computing Is done.

Earthquakes May
Result From
Japanese Bombs
POCATELLO Idaho. (ACP)
Two professors at the southern
branch of University of Idaho have
advanced the theory that extensive
bombing of Japan might cause dis-
placements that would set off de-
vastating earthquakes. They are C.
A. Lee and A. L. Lllllbrldge of geo-
logy and mechanical engineering
departments.
"Bombings themselves won't
cause earthquakes but there is the
possibility how actual or remote
I don't know 'that vibrations set
up by continuous bombings might
result In changing earth pressure
which normally wouldn't occur for
years" Lee explained.
If faults that cause earthquakes
In the Island were almost at the
"shifting point" repeated bombings
might be the right factor to set off
a quake Lee said.

Billies Obtain
Revenge on
McMurray
Last Saturday night In a last
minute flash the Billies defeated
the Indians of McMurry 39-36. Get-
ting oft to a slow start the game
ended in a wild melee as E. J. Ray
dropped a long one-handed shot
through tho mesh to clinch the
game for the local boys.
After a very slow first half Wil-
lis top-notcher center from Mc-
Murry looped In four straight field
goals to help the Indians overcome
the 19-11 lead held by tho Billies
at tho end of the half. However
the boys In blue held their lead
until Morrison sank a crisp shot
to bring the score to 23-21 with ten
minutes to go. Then the local five
went back to work and Smlthers
added one field goal to again tie
up the score which was broken
when Ray dropped In 2 more rin-
gers to leave the score at 27-23.
This lead wus held until with
five minutes to play when Garrett
again tied up the score and Morri-
son immediately recountered to
take the lead again for the Indi-
ans at 31-29. "Flaxle" howeevr
brought the Billies again up to par
with a long loopln one-handed
shot from the corner of the court.
The Red shlrted boys took the lead
a few minutes later as the result
of a double foul. Lewallen missed
his free pitch and Garrett sank his
to again draw the Indians out In
front.
With the score standing at 37-34
in tho Billies favor Ray added the
last field goal to clinch the score
at 39-34. Lewallen then proceeded
to drap himself over Willis just as
the ball left Willis' finger tips and
the final bell went off In a wild
clang together. Willis then rung in
his two free pitches to leave the
final total at 39-36.
Ray was high point man of the
TC clash as the result of 8 field
goals and one free counter Porter
Willis Indian candidate for TC
honors was second with 15 points.
