North Bay Hospital on road to recovery
By CAROL MUNROE
North Bay Hospital CEO Chris
Dux, and Director of Radiology
Fred Deases are very optimistic
about the future of the hospital and
its ability to adequately provide
state-of-the -art medical care for
residents “on this side' of the
bridge”.
While the hospital did file for
Chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier this
year, the very fact that it is still
open and providing services, with
a viable plan for coming out of
bankruptcy by the end of 2005,
and a plan to repay all creditors
what they are due, lends credibili-
ty to their expectation that the
hosptial will not only survive, but
thrive.
North Bay Hospital rejected an
offer from Renaissance Health
Care to purchase the hospital, pri-
marily because it did not include
any plan or offer to repay all cred-
itors. In response to Renaissance’s
statement that they will build a
new hospital anyway. Dux used
the City of Alice as an example.
Christus Spohn, the “old hospital,”
ended up buying the “new hospi-
tal” after it did not see the volume
of business it anticipated.
“People choose a hospital based
on their doctor’s recommendation,
and they way they are treated by
the hospital staff,” Dux said, “not
just because it is ‘new’.”
The hospital had to make hard
decisions to cut some services
such as the intensive care unit and
delivery, although the emergency
room never closed, in order to get
the hospital back on sound ground
financially, with a goal of a 15 per-
cent operating margin with 50 per-
cent of the market in the area.
They are improving existing ser-
vices and developed different
businesss strategies to allow them
to reopen some of the eliminated
services or develop new services.
The reduction in personnel cost
them some good people but also
allowed them to purge their sys-
tem of some less productive
employees. “I chose to stay with
North Bay because I want to work
here,” Deases said. “The employ-
ees we have now are the cream of
the crop.”
Dux recently sent a letter to area
physicians about the hospital plan
to increase their market share of
patients by creating an environ-
ment within the hospital that rec-
ognizes and responds to physi-
cians’ needs within their financial
constraints, and to increase the
number of physicians available in
San Patricio and Aransas
Counties.
“Doctors are recruited to the
community, not to the hospitals.
Any physicians recruited by
Renaissance will benefit North
Bay Hospital as well, and we need
more doctors in almost every spe-
cialty," Dux explained. “For
example, the population needed to
support a family practice doctor is
4,128. There are 92,OCX) people in
the two counties, which means we
could use 23 physicians. There are
15 full-time and three part-time at
present, so the need is here for at
least five more. And that’s just one
specialty.”
Deases has worked at the hospi-
tal for 23 years, and has seen
tremendous changes, not the least
of which is the latest technology
equipment able to perform tests
such as CT scans, MRl’s, QCTs,
and thalium studies as part of
nuclear medicine, to name just a
few.
"Many people don’t realise we
hav jsut the same equipment, and
can perform the same evalations,
as any hospital in Corpus. I will
gladly compare my staff and

Hospital. “I’ll compare my equipment and people with any in Corpus,” said Director of
Radiology Fred Deases.
equipment to any there,” said
Deases.
“People don’t need to take time
off from work and drive twenty-
five miles to get mammograms,
bone density scans, colonoscopies,
flourescopy studies, Upper GI
series, I VPs routine xrays and so
forth. Not only can we do them
here, there is a much shorter wait-
ing time.” Deases explained. “Our
technologists stay current on all
the latest technologies.”
One of those techologists, 15
year employee Jesse Jiminez,
summed it up best. “This may be
an old hospital, but it has nice new
equipment.” He added, “Since it is
a small hospital, everyone is like
family here.”
One of the keys to the reorgani-
zation success of North Bay
Hospital is for both doctors and
the public know the extent of the
services the hospital is capable of
performing. There is no doubt that
this area needs a hospital, and in
order for it to survive, those ser-
vices need to be utilized by the
people who live right here.
We want to get the word out that
North Bay Hospital is alive and
well, and fully capable of taking
care of many, many medical needs
right here, without the need to
travel for them.”
