OFF AND RUNNING
TWO POINTS
Kermit quarterback Greg Davis is shown as he bulled his way around left end for two
points in the contest against the Seminole Indians. The two points came on a busted play,
after a bad snap from center kept the Jackets from scoring the customary point after
attempt by Clifton King. The Jackets came from a first half deficit to slip by the Indians

Kermit tailback, Clifford Holt, turns on the afterburners as he races around left end on a
long gainer for the Yellow Jackets. Holt was the leading rusher for the Jackets and scored
one touchdown on a 47-yard run. The Jackets came back from a 16-0 deficit in the first
half to outscore the Indians in an array of offensive genius. The Jackets went to a new six
man front, defensively, and stopped the Indians on several occasions to help the offense
win the contest. / (Staff Photo)

touchdown. Clifton King put
the boot to the ball for the
point after attempt and the
Jackets were trailing by a
score of 16-7.
The Indians weren’t quite
ready to give-up the contest,
however, as they rallied once
again and on their next
possession took the ball in for
their final score of the
evening. Taking over on their
own 34-yard line, the Indians
drove the 66 yards in only six
plays for the score. The final
play of the series which
resulted in the score was a
pass from Indian quarterback
Scott Jameson to Chip
Chappel. Curry posted the
one.point with a perfect kick
and the Indians had opened
an almost insurmountable
lead.
The Jackets were not out
of the contest by a longshot
and after a dual exchange of
the football the Jackets were
once again on their way.
Kermit made some
adjustments in their offense
and with junior quarterback
Scott Edwards at the helm

the air for the final 14 yards
and the scork. King’s extra
point attempt was stopped by
a bad snap, but Davis, holding
the ball on the attempt, took
the ball and raced around his
left end to put two points on
the board. Kermit was then
only eight points underdog as
the Indians led 23-15.
Kermit’s offense, finding a
new sense of ability, kept the
fire burning and never let up
on the Indian defense as once
again on their next position
they rolled downfield. This
time the Jackets put together
the most impressive drive of
the season as they traveled
downfield 55 yards in ten
plays for the score. Ray
Jennings took the ball over
for the Jackets from the one
yard line and the Jackets
were closing the gap. Kermit
decided to go for two points,
but the Indian defense rose to
the occasion stopping Davis
for a loss. Kermit’s hopes for
a comeback victory lost a
little of it’s glow, but the
Jackets as a team, both
offense and defense, never
gave up.
With less than six minutes
to go in the contest the
Jackets put a stop to the
Indians in only four downs
and took control of the ball
on their own 42-yard line.

A tough Monahans seventh previously had a 6-win, no
grade volleyball squad handed loss record,
the Kermit seventh grade Monahans edged the
their first loss of the season Daubers 16-14 in the opening

fast for the Jackets at this
point as they completely
annihilated the Indian
defense which was
beginning to show the signs of
being on the field for
much of the I last half. On a
quick sweep around right end
Kermit’s speedburner Clifford
Holt took the pitchout from
Scott Edwards and raced 47
yards for the score that won
the game for the Jackets.
King’s PAT was wide of the
mark, but the touchdown
alone showed to be enough as
the Jackets went out front
for the first time in the
contest 27-23.
The Seminole squad went
to desperation football after
the Jacket score and threw
the ball several times hoping
for a long reception, but the
Jacket secondary rose to the
occasion and after a staunch
defensive show the Jackets
pulled their third win of the
season out of the bag
downing the Seminole
Indians 27-23.
The' Jackets will take to
the road Friday as they travel
to Fabens to take on the
Wildcats in a contest which is
scheduled to get underway a
8:30 p.m. CST. The Indians
will open their district
schedule Friday as they host
the Andrews Mustangs in a
battle of two of the top
teams in the District 2-AAA.
Kermit opens district play
Oct. 29 when they travel to
Sonora to take on the
Bronchos.
