human efforts to traverse and settle the Great Plains of the United
States between 1540 and 1900. Finally, from The Hereford Jour-
nal (October, 1936), came "British Pounds and British Pure-
breds," a summary of the effects of British capital and cattle on
the West Texas ranching industry in the second half of the nine-
teenth century.
This compilation will stand with The Life and Times of Tim-
othy Dwight Hobart 1855-1935 (Canyon, 1950), and the Pan-
handle-Plains Historical Review, which Sheffy edited from 1930
to 1948, as a primary record of the work done by a pioneer his-
