will have seen by the papers, the force bill, or Southern elections
bill, will not come up at this session. The Republicans, however,
are very intent on passing it, and seem determined to pass it in the
next session if not in this. At the next session, however, we will have
a better chance to defeat it, because the session lasts only about 90
days and all the appropriation bills and other bills will have to be
passed in that time, and we can make such a contest over it that
I think we can beat it, because they will not have time to pass it.
There is some talk of an extra session to be called as soon as the
elections are over in November, for the purpose of passing that
bill. Whether that will be called or not, I cannot tell. My health
has not been as good this session as usual. For five or six weeks,
I was quite unwell, and for some two weeks of the time confined
to my room with sciatic rheumatism. I could scarcely walk at all
for two or three weeks, but am all right now. The pain has all
left me, and, the weather becoming cool, my health is very good.
I never had a twinge of rheumatism before in my life and I don't
want it any more. I was cured of it by the electric treatment, tak-
ing a current of electricity through my leg every morning. Now, I
have no trace of it left. Am very anxious to get back to Texas, have
been gone so long. I tried to get my wife to come here in May, but
Dick5 has always had such an aversion to being in Washington
that I think he over-persuaded her not to come. I think it would
have been much better for her if she had come. In my last letter
from her, she said her health, in her heart and bowels, had become
better. When I go home, I will have but a very short time to re-
main, especially if an extra session of Congress should be called.
Have no news of any special interest that you do not see in the
papers. Your friend truly,
Richard Coke
