Southwestern Historical Quarterly
The Association will hold its annual meeting at the Sheraton-Fort
Worth Hotel, March 9-11, 1972. The meeting will include sixteen ses-
sions and the auction of Texana. Members are urged to send in Texana
for the auction.
Association members will be the guests of the Amon G. Carter Mu-
seum of Western Art at a cocktail party Thursday evening, March 9,
from 5:3o until 7:30. On Friday evening the A. M. Pates, Jr., are giving
a barbecue at their ranch near Fort Worth for members attending the
The Society of Architectural Historians is meeting in San Francisco,
January 26-30, at the San Francisco Hilton Hotel. Information on ses-
sions and topics is available from the meeting chairman, Alan Gowans,

The Organization of American Historians will convene in Wash-
ington, D.C., April 5-8 for its annual meeting.
May 6, 1972, is the date set for the meeting at Commerce, Texas, of
the East 'Texas Historical Association. Ralph Goodwin of East Texas
State University will be chairman of local arrangements, and Frank
Jackson of the same institution will be program chairman.
The Association lost a long-time friend this fall, with the death in
October of Chris Emmett. Best known to historians for his book, Shang-
hai Pierce-winner of the Summerfield G. Roberts Award in 1953 as
best portraying "the spirit, character, strength and deeds" of the men
of the Republic of Texas-Chris also provided solid support for the
study of history in many other ways. For years the Association's annual
book auction would have been incomplete without his contributions.
