Southwestern Historical Quarterly
WE NEED YOUR HELP!
Every year many copies of the Quarterly come back to our office because
members did not arrange for the forwarding of second class mail. The Post
Office charges Us for returning these Quarterlies-a charge that is many
times the cost of the original postage. We must then pay for the second
mailing, also at several times the original postage. Even the second envelope
adds to our expense.
To cover some of these cash expenses we are raising our handling charge
for second mailings to $1.50; but this fee does not cover the total cost to
the Association each time we remail a Quarterly. We can add up the post-
age and envelope prices and estimate the dollar value of staff time given
to the job. With our very limited office staff, however, there is an even
greater but undefinable cost in Association work left undone-just because
a staff member recorded, repackaged, readdressed, and remailed your
So, save yourself a $i.50 fee and considerable inconvenience and help
us cut our costs and conserve valuable working hours by arranging to have
your second class mail forwarded and by notifying us immediately of a
permanent change of address when you move!
A SECOND SOS!
Each year many members postpone renewing their memberships until
they receive the third bill from our office. Instead of i3, we spend 39#
in postage; instead of one envelope, we must use three; and a staff mem-
ber has given three times as much time to the accounts as should have been
necessary. Please, dear members-be generous. Send in your dues when
you receive the first notice!
The Association will hold its i977 annual meeting in Dallas, March
3-5, at the Baker Hotel.
The seventh Gulf Coast History and Humanities Conference will be held
in Pensacola, Florida, February i8-19, 1977. The theme is "The Military
Presence on the Gulf Coast." Further information and copies of the pub-
lished proceedings of the six previous conferences are available by writing
to W. S. Coker, program chairman, GCHHC, The Library, University of
West Florida, Pensacola, Florida 32504.
