Arthur T. Lee, stationed on the frontier in Texas (1848-1860), established
Fort Chadbourne in 1852 and Fort Quitman in 1858, and helped build
Fort Davis, where he lived for four years. At some of his posts Lee recorded
his observations in skilled and sensitive paintings. This view of Rio Grande
