Southwestern Historical Quarterly
Index to Book Reviews in Historical Periodicals 1972. By John W. Brewster
and Joseph A. McLeod. (Metuchen, New Jersey: Scarecrow Press, Inc.,
1976. Pp. xii+381. Index. $12.)
In the July 1976 Southwestern Historical Quarterly I reviewed Indexes
for 1973 and 1974, companion volumes to the Index for 1972, somewhat un-
favorably because of the number of errors and inconsistencies and the lack
of subject and reviewer indexes. All those criticisms are applicable to this
new Index. This time all the reviews in the Quarterly are included, but ab-
breviation used to refer to the Quarterly in the text is different from the one
in the list of abbreviations. The same is true consistently for the Journal of
Arizona History and sporadically for other journals. Whereas the 1973 and
1974 volumes consistently had cross references for joint authors, there are
none in the 1972 one. Part of the time the complete citation is given for each
author, but most of the time no reference is made to joint authors. Because
an accurate and well-done index to book reviews in historical journals would
be of great assistance to historians and librarians, it is to be fondly hoped
that the compilers will exercise much greater care in future volumes than
they have in the past ones.
