Cover: "Stephen F. Austin," artist unknown. Courtesy Texas State Li-
brary, Austin, Texas.
Although the identity of the artist who painted this portrait is not known,
Austin family tradition maintains that Stephen F. Austin himself sat for the
painting. Henrietta Austin Cunningham, granddaughter of Henry Austin
(Stephen F.'s cousin and close friend), gave the painting to her daughter Sara
Cunningham Millspaugh, who in turn passed it to Austin Millspaugh. In
1972 Mr. and Mrs. Austin Cunningham Millspaugh presented the portrait
to the State, and it now hangs in the reading room of the Archives Division
at the State Library. A full-color 18-by-27 inch poster reproduction of the
portrait may be purchased from the Archives for 65 cents plus mailing
charges and sales tax (Archives Division, Texas State Library, P.O. Box
12927, Austin, Texas 78711).
