General Sherman commanded the left wing of the Texas forces at the
Battle of San Jacinto. He had raised and equipped a company of fifty-two
Volunteers, whom he brought to Texas in early 1836 from Kentucky. Sher-
man's company was the only unit in the Texas army to have traditional
uniforms, and they carried the only flag that the Texans had for the decisive
Sherman posed for this portrait in Kentucky in late December, 1835,
wearing his Texas army uniform.
