Printer in Three Republics
A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF SAMUEL BANGS
First Printer in Texas,
and First Printer West of the Louisiana Purchase
By JOHN H. JENKINS
Samuel Bangs, printer and citizen in the republics of Texas, Mexico, and
the United States, was a pioneer who spread the printed word over an area
larger than any other printer in history. His extraordinary career, printing
from 1811 to 1854, included work in the shop of Watson & Bangs in Boston
and in the new Methodist Printing House in New York, but his fame rests
on his imprints in Jean Lafitte's pirate headquarters in Galveston in 1816-
17, on the Mina Expedition that invaded Mexico, as a prisoner-of-war
printer for the Mexicans (printing the first imprints in Tamaulipas, Nuevo
Leon, and Coahuila), as a printer in the Republic of Texas, and as printer
for Zachary Taylor's army in the Mexican War of 1846-1848.
This new work comprises a complete bibliography of 572 known im-
prints by Bangs. It includes exact physical descriptions, full bibliographi-
cal details and citations, location of all known copies, and full historical
commentary and annotations on each imprint, as well as a historical and
biographical introduction and index. Also included are appendices of
Bangs' imprints in Boston and for the Methodist Printing House in New
York. (Hitherto, the only work on Bangs' imprints was the 359-item check-
list as an appendix to Lota Spell's biography of Bangs.)
