William Henry Huddle was born in Wytheville, Virginia, in 1847 and
settled in Paris, Texas, in 1866. After leaving Texas to study art first in New
York City and later in Munich, Germany, he returned to Austin in 1884
and died in 1892. He is well known for his portraits of early Texas heroes
and Texas government executives.
His painting David Crockett hangs in the Capitol and has recently been
restored by the Texas Regional Art Conservation Center in Houston.
