The three hundredth anniversary of the landing of the French explorer
Rend Robert Cavelier, Sieur de la Salle, on the coast of Texas occurs in
x1985. La Salle established a colony on Matagorda Bay and constructed Fort
St. Louis on the Lavaca River in 1685. The fort was used as a base for ex-
peditions until 1689, when disease, famine, and Indians destroyed the
colony and the fort. The French presence that is celebrated in Roger
Casses's painting alarmed the Spanish in Mexico and increased their ac-
tivity in colonial Texas. The Landing of Cavelier de la Salle in Texas was
presented by the French Republic to the people of Texas in 1936 on the
occasion of Texas's Centennial. It was exhibited in the Hall of State at the
Centennial Exposition in Dallas and was later put in the care of the Dallas
Historical Society, which continues to exhibit the painting at the Hall of
State.
