second lieutenant from Indiana, James Arthur Iliff, who commanded a
company of Buffalo Soldiers (the 41st U.S. Colored Infantry) in West
Texas in 1868-1870 and the wife and baby he took west with him. It is
based on papers in the Indiana Historical Society Library and research
conducted at the Fort Davis National Historic Site. The author, a great-
