Southwestern Historical Quarterly
This carte de visite of Edrnunds Balard Holloway was taken in 1848 by photogra-
pher G. Hannaman of Shelbyville, Ill. Holloway, a native of Kentucky and an
1843 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy, was breveted to first lieutenant for
gallant and meritorious conduct as an infantry officer in the battles of Contreras
and Churubusco during the Mexican-American War. Still a captain after eigh-
teen years of service, Holloway resigned in May 1861 and became a colonel in
the Missouri State Guards on the Confederate side in the Civil War. He was acci-
