This "memory picture" by "Aunt Clara" McDonald Williamson depicts the
arrival of the railroad in the small community of Iredell in 188o. The im-
pact of railroads on towns such as Iredell, Columbus, Tyler, and Cleburne
was large. Billy Cowart was one railroad engineer who witnessed these
changes and experienced the ups and downs of railroad life in the late
nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. For his story see the presidential
address of Cissy Stewart Lale, his granddaughter, beginning on page 415.
