1997 Book Reviews 531
This is not a reference book for scholars or historians; and it contains no foot-
notes, no bibliography, and no index. The more interesting chapters reveal brief
back-stage glimpses into Dr. Chapman's life and career. Overall, it is a rather
frustrating book: fascinating in some of its detail, illuminating in some of its in-
sight, but making one wish for a more coherent, systematic volume. Despite
these limitations, this eclectic volume demonstrates the power of a life story as a
way of accessing historical milestones. Hearts, Helicopters and Houston can be
mined selectively, depending on the reader's interests and inclinations, for its
ideas and information.
