In 1992, the TSHA published War Scare on the Rio Grande: Robert Runyon's
Photographs of the Border Conflict, 1913-1916, by Frank N. Samponaro and
Paul J. Vanderwood. This book featured some of Runyon's remarkable
and historically significant photographs of the Mexican Revolution that
raged near the border in the years just prior to World War I. Equally im-
portant for understanding the development of this same border region
are the photographic postcard images that Runyon took in those years,
promoting and advertising the region as an area for settlement, agricul-
ture, and tourism. In an article beginning on page 211 of this issue, Lin-
da Peterson assesses the importance of these postcard images against the
larger background of Runyon's work as a prominent photographer, politi-
cian, and businessman on the border.
