Maurice K. Simons suffered serious injuries while serving in Zachary Taylor's
army in southern Texas and northern Mexico during the Mexican-American
War. This undated photo does not show that he returned from that war with
only one leg. Even so, the disability did not prevent him from volunteering his
services to the Confederacy, during which he recorded details in his journal
